Work for Michael's students, 15/03/22

FIRST YEAR

This week you are going to be making a magazine as a class. In order to do this, you will need to start planning.

Task 1: Please CLICK HERE to read this blogpost

In particular, check out the links at the bottom that link to previous student magazines. Get inspired!

Task 2: Photoshop Tutorial

You have two choices here. Either go on to YouTube and find a decent BASIC photoshop tutorial, or follow one of these, written by Tom:

Run through the tutorial step by step. Remember, you'll eventually be using Photoshop in your coursework!

Task 3: come up with ideas

And come up with ideas and examples of things you want to make this week for this magazine. If possible, go out and take some pictures. Start planning some memes and costume designs. You have COMPLETE FREEDOM, so make the most of it

Ideally, it would be AMAZING if on your second lesson (Thursday), you can turn up with costumes and ideas and head straight out and shoot!

Extension work: if you haven’t finished the magazine research stuff from last week, now is the FINAL chance to do it…

SECOND YEAR

For this lesson, you will analyse a music video of your choice. Follow these now familiar steps:

  • Choose a music video, released in the last three years, with a strong visual style that is not too 'controversial'...
  • Watch the first 90 seconds three times in a row
  • Jot down this question: How does media language incorporate viewpoints and ideologies in this music video? [15]
  • Underline the key terms
  • Note your knee jerk reaction
  • Do a brief and scrappy plan
  • Then, pick out AT LEAST six screenshots from your video. Identify the most important elements of media language, and note down what this MEANS.

This might seem like a straightforward task, but not enough students adequately explored the deeper, often symbolic MEANINGS in their mock last week. This task is an excellent opportunity to address this!

Extension: pick another video that is the BINARY OPPOSITE of the first video you looked at. So if you looked at Kpop, now check out some death metal. Something weird, confusing, something you don't even like. And do exactly the same. Screenshot, media language, DEEPER MEANING!
