Exploring the representation of gender in the ‘Jinx’ sequence of Die Another Day

  • The sequence begins with a slow Zoom on Bond’s face, emphasising his importance and power. The MES of his binoculars cover his face, and we cut to a POV mid shot framed in the scope of binoculars, emphasising Bond’s interest in the woman. We cut back to bond, as he stares voyeuristically at Jinx
  • Voyeurism  - taking pleasure at watching someone when they do not know they are being watched
  • Bond announces “magnificent view”, and takes a sip of his drink. We cut to a close up of Jinx’s flattered expression, and she responds ‘thanks’
  • As Jinx emerges from the water, she walks in an exaggerated and stereotypically seductive way that draws attention to her hips, which reinforces the stereotype that women are included in films merely to be looked at
  • Audience positioning - how the audience is ‘placed’ by the producer, using media language
  • Jinx is wearing a revealing swimsuit which emphasises her large breasts. The actor is conventionally attractive, with an hourglass figure, and this is further anchored through the pink colour of her swimsuit, which has symbolic connotations of femininity and sexuality.
  • James Bond is smoking a cigar, a symbol of masculinity
  • The combination of slow motion footage, and luxurious and dramatic music emphasises her beauty of being something beyond that of the average person. After a slow zoom is made on Bond’s face, clearly indicating he is putting binoculars up to his eyes, we cut to a POV shot o bond staring through the binoculars at Jinx’ s wet body.
  • Voyeurism - taking pleasure at watching somebody when they do not know they are being watched
  • Positioning - how the audience is ‘placed’ by the producer, using techniques such as shot types, camera angles, colours and so on
  • The audience is consistently positioned with bond throughout the clip. This is moist notably achieved through the use of POV shots, and further anchored through the relatable bar room setting, and Bond’s relatable, comfortable beach attire. Bond, a heterosexual men is clearly fascinating by a hegemonically attractive woman which positions the target audience as a heterosexual
  • The male gaze - the idea that every media product is constructed to be looked at by a male, heterosexual audience
