"This is a mess, but it's a mess on purpose": dark patterns and roach motels

If you needed yet more proof that online media is manipulative at both an institutional and mechanical level, check out this awesome video by Nerwriter on Youtube. The gist is that websites, with their often beautiful and logical UX  are excellent at providing us the information that the producer wants to share with us (for example, buying something!), but are even better at witholding the information that they do not want to share, like how to delete your account. The most effective websites are both friendly and logical, yet also confusing and manipulative.

It's algorithmically assisted hypercapitalism, and it works!

Richie sent me the link for this, and please, if you find anything useful about any aspect of media, share it with your teacher so we can share it on the blog. I am now always going to think of websites as 'roach motels', as an intricate maze with a cockroach scuttling around like mad. Thanks Richie...
