How is Black Panther an example of a blockbuster film?

Potential exam question: To what extent could Black Panther be considered a mainstream film?

Black Panther is a perfect example of a big-budget, mainstream ,blockbuster, tentpole production. And since it cost so much to produce and market, Disney, it's multimedia integrated distributer must ensure that it is as profitable as possible

KEY FACTS

  •  Highest grossing film made by a black producer, and the 14th highest grossing film of all time
  • Originally shown on Netflix, but then the rights reverted back to Disney
  • First planned in 1992, with the actor Wesley Snipes in the main role
  • Budget of 200million$$$,
  • Marketing budget of 150million$$$
  • First two months: 1.34billion$$$

An enormous blockbuster film, which carries significant risk for Disney

What makes Black Panther a blockbuster?

  • High production values
  • Hybrid of three mainstream genres (action, superhero, science fiction)
  • Genre conventions are extremely clear. for example, Marvel logo, futuristic cityscape, exciting soundtrack, big explosions...)
  • Significant mainstream actors, including Chadwick Boseman, Andy Serkis, Martin Freeman, Michael B Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o...
  • Extensive use of expensive CGI, including spaceships, armour transitions, fantasy cities, explosions,
  • Stunts and stunt actors
  • Marvel branding and Marvel logo demonstrates a certain level of quality
  • Kenrick Lamar poster referenced
  • Film clearly ties in to the black lives matter movement
  • Wakanda Forever slogan

Subversive elements

While Black Panther is clearly a mainstream film, there are several elements that are rather more subversive, and arguably could limit the film's profitability. Major studios have historically been hesitant tp produce mainstream 'black cinema', on the assumption that 'black films' will only appeal to 'black audiences'. Perhaps the universal critical and audience appeal of Black Panther will change this?

  • A clear political message
  • Black main cast
  • African setting
  • Accents of the actors
